Laurens Patzlaff (Professor of Piano Improvisation at the University of Music, Freiburg, Germany) is the only professor of piano improvisation I know of. His unique focus engages audiences around the world on a different level and expands people's conceptions of what classical music is and also what it can be. His innate gift for improvisation provides insights into the future of classical music and a unique lens into the adventures that freedom of artist expression can offer.
In this conversation we discuss:
Improvisation as a transformational force in classical music
The adventures improvisation offers as a tool for managing performance anxiety
The resurgence of interest in classical music by young people and the role improvisation is playing in that renewed interest
